Stampeders training camp report: Day 10

WEATHER

It was a scorcher from start to finish.

WHO WASN’T THERE

C Pierre Lavertu (neck) and his sophomore backup Karl Lavoie (knee) both sat out, as did LG Shane Bergman. None are considered to be in long-term jeopardy … S Josh Bell was also a spectator.

WHO RETURNED

RB Tory Harrison returned after spending a week on the sideline – actually, in his bed – trying to overcome a nasty stomach virus. He lost seven pounds during the ordeal.

NEWS OF THE DAY

The Stamps made their first cuts – dropping WR Carlton Mitchell, C/G Byron Pinkston and DT Marcus Thompson – while KR Skye Dawson elected to retire.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Wideout Anthony Parker got behind coverage and went deep down the sideline. QB Drew Tate threw the long ball over out-stretched CB Fred Bennett, who was looking to make the interception.

PLAYER OF THE DAY

Rookie QB Andrew Buckley, locked in a battle with incumbent third-stringer Bryant Moniz, had a solid day. The former Calgary Dinos star looked good, especially leading the hurry-up offence.

WHAT THEY SAID

“He’s got a (target) on him. Guys are going to give him their best game and I’m going to challenge him harder. If you’re going to receive those post-season honours, you had better practise and play like you deserve them.”

— Offensive line coach Pat DelMonaco on RG Spencer Wilson
